모기지 디폴트의 발전 |

| 모건 스탠리(Morgan Stanley)가 최근 발표한 연구에 따르면, 주택 담보대출 채무불이행 중 대략 12% 정도가 소위 말하는 "전략적 디폴트(strategic defaults)"이다. 전략적 디폴트란 현재 집값이 대출 금액보다 낮기 때문에 채무자가 융자금 상환을 중단하기로 결정하는 것이다.

| The device that is widely used to detect lies today, the polygraph, is simply too unreliable. It is too inaccurate for the results to be admissible in court cases. A 2002 report by the National Research Council concluded that the polygraph can’t distinguish innocent people from guilty ones. In response, the U.S. Department of Energy began relying less on the use of the polygraph to conduct security checks on its employees. |

광학 컴퓨팅의 시대 |

| 1940년대 초 이후 컴퓨팅은 소형 로직 스위치와 전기 고주파(higher electrical frequencies)가 전부였다. 이후 튜브는 개별소자 트랜지스터로 대체되었고, 다시 이것이 집적회로로 바뀌었다. 오늘날은 이러한 방향이 어디로 향하고 있는가? 일대 혁명을 일으킬 양자 역학과 광학으로 넘어가고 있다. 앞으로 20년이 지나지 않아, 양자 컴퓨터 활용이 본격화되면 현재는 본질적으로 불가능한 문제들이 일상적으로 해결될 수 있다. 하지만 양자 컴퓨터에 앞서 그 자리는 광학 컴퓨팅으로 주요 응용분야가 상당한 발전을 할 것 같다.
