| 지적(知的) 엘리트 계층은 민주주의와 과학의 발전이 종교의 종말을 의미할 것으로 생각해왔다. 사람들이 부유해지고, 교육 수준이 높아지고, 성적으로 자유로워지면서 성서는 뒷전으로 밀려났으며, 사람들은 비합리적인 믿음은 뒤로 한 채 교회, 유대교 회당, 또는 모스크가 아닌 쇼핑몰에서 주말을 보낸다. 하지만 상황은 엘리트가 예상했던 것처럼 바뀌지 않았다. 자신들이 ‘무교’라고 주장하는 미국인들이 소규모로 발전한 반면, 매우 헌신적인 미국인 신자들의 비율은 그보다 훨씬 빠르게 증가해왔다.
